Pradeep Tharakan has over 17 years of experience focused on global energy and environmental issues. His primary expertise is in the origination, financing, and delivery of large-scale clean energy investment programs in the public sector; the fostering of inter-governmental and public-private partnerships for effective development action; and development research.

Pradeep has worked for the Asian Development Bank (ADB) since 2010. He currently serves as Unit Head, Sovereign Energy Operations, Greater Mekong subregion; and is based at ADB’s Thailand offices, and leads ADB’s sovereign lending and policy support for energy activities across Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Previously, he was ADB’s Energy Team Lead for Indonesia and was based in Jakarta from 2012-2016.

Over the past decade, Pradeep has been involved in the origination, implementation, and close-out of public sector energy infrastructure projects in southeast Asia totaling 2.6 billion USD. This includes solar parks, large hydropower projects, and cross-border power trade projects. He has led project facilitation and policy advisory work across a variety of technology areas such as solar auctions, wind power and geothermal energy development, carbon capture and storage, rural electrification, and energy efficiency, and a range of financing modalities such as climate finance, thematic bonds, and policy-based and results-based loans.

Pradeep’s research has been published in Nature, Energy Policy, and the Energy Journal, among others. Pradeep has a PhD in Environmental Science, a MBA, and a master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration.
