South Africa’s prioritization of Africa in its Foreign Policy is both a consequence of geography and a legacy of the Continent’s commitment to South Africa’s national liberation struggle against colonialism and apartheid. Since the realization of democracy in 1994, South Africa has prioritized Africa as a political, economic, and development partner, often looking to the continent’s regional communities as the primary building blocks towards achieving economic goals (African Continental Free Trade Area- AFCFTA), consolidating democracy, human rights and maintaining peace. Join Zama Ngwane, former South African Foreign Service Officer, for some reflections on working on regional economic integration in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).
MPP Forum is a weekly event normally scheduled with lunch* on Fridays during the academic year. It allows each MPP student to showcase their career journey and expertise on policy issue of their choice with the SPIA community. This formal presentation is about 50 minutes followed by Q&A.
*RSVP required. Lunch will be served at noon. We will try our best but cannot guarantee accommodation for all dietary restrictions.
