Biography
Stavros Lambrinidis is the Ambassador of the European Union to the United Nations as of 1 January 2024.
From 1 March 2019 to 31 December 2023, he served as the Ambassador of the European Union to the United States.
Previously, from 2012 to 2019, he served as European Union Special Representative for Human Rights, tasked with increasing the effectiveness, cohesion, and visibility of the EU's human rights foreign policy.
In 2011, he was Foreign Affairs Minister of Greece.
Between 2004 and 2011, he was twice-elected Member of the European Parliament (MEP) with the Greek Social Democratic Party (PASOK). He served as Vice-President of the European Parliament, Vice-President of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee, and Head of the PASOK Delegation. He was the Parliament's Rapporteur on cutting-edge policies such as the Promotion of Security and Fundamental Rights in the Internet Age; the Integration of Immigrants in Europe; and the Protection of Critical Infrastructures against terrorist threats.
Between 2000 and 2004, he was Director-General of the International Olympic Truce Centre, an International Olympic Committee organization established to promote peace and reconciliation initiatives during the Olympic Games.
Mr. Lambrinidis has received several recognitions for his leading work on human rights, democracy, and privacy, including the Electronic Privacy Information Center's "Champion of Freedom Award" in 2020 and the Boston Global Forum's "World Leader in Artificial Intelligence Award" in 2021.
He is a member of the President's Council on International Activities at Yale University, a former President of the DC Bar Association's Human Rights Committee, a Professor Emeritus of the Mariupol Institute of Humanities in Ukraine, and holds a Presidential Honorary Doctorate from West Virginia University.
He has lectured extensively throughout the world on human rights and humanitarian law, sustainable development, environment and climate, international trade, internet privacy, immigration and asylum, foreign and security policy, transatlantic relations, and the European Union and multilateralism. He has led political, diplomatic, and academic delegations on official visits to over 70 countries and international organizations.
Mr. Lambrinidis was born in Athens, Greece in 1962. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in Economics and Political Science from Amherst College and his Juris Doctor degree (JD) from Yale Law School, where he was Managing Editor of The Yale Journal of International Law. He is a 1980 graduate of the Athens College High School in Greece. He is married and has a daughter.
