Biography
Carter Roberts has served as President & CEO of World Wildlife Fund in the United States since 2005 and grown the organization fivefold during that time. WWF, the world’s largest network of international conservation organizations, works across 100 countries and enjoys the support of nearly one million members in the United States and more than five million members worldwide.
Roberts is the founding chair of Enduring Earth, a collaboration that joins policy reform with performance-based finance to help governments meet their 30x30 goals around the world. Since Enduring Earth’s launch in 2021, its efforts have secured the durable conservation of 210 million hectares and strengthened community livelihoods through focused rural economic development. Roberts has been deeply engaged in crafting and executing transactions in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru that have conserved over 88million hectares across the Amazon, just over 13% of the entire Amazon basin.
For the past 20 years, Roberts has overseen the development of groundbreaking corporate partnerships to drive supply chain efficiency, food production sustainability, water efficiency, science-based targets to reduce emissions and stepwise transitions to lighten their impact on the planet. Under Roberts’ leadership, WWF also worked with others to double the population of tigers around the world and significantly reduce poaching of elephants and rhinos.
In 2023, Roberts also founded the Boundless Conservation Collective. Boundless is a cohort-based fellowship program that seeks to cultivate, nurture, and sustain a new generation of global environmental leaders with an emphasis on resilience, wonder, and awe.
Before coming to WWF-US, Roberts led international conservation and science programs for 15 years at The Nature Conservancy after starting his career in marketing management positions for Procter & Gamble and Gillette. Roberts earned his MBA from Harvard Business School following a BA in History from Princeton University.
Roberts serves on the boards of the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability at Duke University, the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment at Imperial College London, and the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Roberts has learned most of the songs of all the birds of North America and seen over 760 species in most every remote corner of the continent. He and his wife Jackie are the proud parents of three children, all of whom work in the environmental field.
