Democracy and Development in the Global South (New York, NY)

Department(s)

In Conversation:

Justice Willy Mutunga and Professor Jennifer Widner

Democracies are fragile. What does it take to create, sustain and safeguard a modern democracy? From those examining emerging foreign threats to Western democracies to those pushing efforts in developing countries – all agree that the rule of law, stewarded by a well-grounded judicial system, is a vital component of a functioning democracy. Mutunga, a pioneer in the development of law and human rights in Kenya, will talk with Widner about steps the Global South can implement on a journey toward democracy.

Willy Mutunga, former Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kenya; Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence, the Leitner Center for International Law and Justice, Fordham University

Jennifer Widner, Professor of Politics and International Affairs; Director, Innovations for Successful Societies, Princeton University
