Biography
Karel is an international development and humanitarian practitioner with over a decade of service in the Middle East, West and East Africa, and Southeast Asia. Most recently, he spent six years working on the Syria Crisis with UNHCR and the Norwegian Refugee Council on expanding social safety nets, improving community empowerment, and improving organizational impact. He has particular expertise in applied research methods. Karel started his career as a researcher on counterinsurgency tactics and radicalization, followed by stints with the International Crisis Group and Save the Children. At Princeton, Karel is interested in how urban policy and the private sector could intersect to drive inclusive economic growth for migrants and refugees. He is also interested in making public institutions more agile and innovative. Karel holds a Master of Philosophy from the University of Oxford, where he was a Weidenfeld-Hoffman Scholar, as well as a B.A. from Wesleyan University. Unfortunately, Karel suffers in the heat and yet has spent the majority of his career in some of the hottest places on earth.
