Biography

As the daughter of hardworking and humble-origined Egyptian immigrants, Mariam grew up in London navigating questions of identity and belonging (and trying to keep up with her impossibly intelligent and over-accomplished older brothers). One universal value she never questioned, however, was the importance of being of service to others. She graduated from the University of Oxford with a B.A. in philosophy, politics and economics, and has thereafter honoured her commitment to public service within the NGO, corporate, government and personal spheres. She has worked in an INGO supporting smallholder farmers in Africa, championed corporate sustainability at a global bank in the U.K. and Qatar and designed and implemented programmes to develop the professional capabilities of Qatar's future financial services leaders. In her most recent role, she has shaped U.K. Government policy in support of Qatar National Vision 2030 by orchestrating bilateral cooperation on economic diversification, food security and environmental sustainability. In her parallel life, Mariam is a certified fitness instructor, passionately empowering people from all walks of life to believe in themselves, nurture their mental and physical health and achieve their goals. Mariam comes to Princeton with a determination to carve out the next chapter in her personal and professional life of service, as well as to make memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. She loves all things food, fitness and travel (especially when combined; picture cycling along a stunning beachfront while eating ice cream) and plans to maximize her exploration of all three during her time in the U.S.
