The Woodrow Wilson School will host a film screening by Israeli singer-songwriter David Broza, titled “East Jerusalem/West Jerusalem” at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2015 in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall. A Q&A, along with some songs with Broza, will follow the screening.

In January 2013, Broza went into a recording studio in predominantly-Palestinian East Jerusalem and, along with Israeli musicians and local Palestinian musicians, under the musical direction of the American Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, Steve Earle, recorded a new album and filmed the process. The film shows the story of the camaraderie and bridge-building that can take place through music, even in a longtime war zone.

During the eight-day session in the studio, the muscisians shared their life stories and learned surprising truths about each other. As the two members described the realities of Shuafat refugee camp, where they lived, Broza decided to visit the place in the dark of night.

Broza also toured the Old City of Jerusalem with a Palestinian friend, seeing it from a different perspective. Producer Steve Earle, who wrote in the 1990s a song called "Jerusalem" (recorded by Broza especially for this project), saw the city for the first time: The eight-day stay in Jerusalem offered him unexpected insights into the political and cultural complexities of the region.
