John F. Sopko, Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), Office of the Inspector General, will present a public lecture at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015, in Robertson Hall, on the Princeton University campus.

The U.S. has provided almost $110 billion for the reconstruction of Afghanistan, and too much of this aid has been provided with no strings attached. Inspector General Sopko will discuss the importance of placing conditions on U.S. aid to Afghanistan to ensure that U.S. taxpayers' massive investment reaps its intended dividends.

Sopko became the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction in 2012, after more than 37 years of accountability work with government and the private sector. SIGAR oversees the development work of U.S. agencies in Afghanistan, including the Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Defense, the Department of State and the Agency for International Development.

Prior to his appointment, he served as partner at the law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP.  From 2007 to 2009, Sopko served as chief counsel for oversight and investigations for the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Previously, he was deputy director of the Homeland Security Institute from 2005 to 2007, and minority general counsel and chief of investigations for the U.S. House Select Committee on Homeland Security from 2003 to 2005.

From 1999 to 2003, Sopko held a number of roles at the U.S. Department of Commerce, including deputy director of the National Technical Information Service; acting assistant secretary and deputy assistant secretary of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration; deputy assistant secretary for export enforcement; and chief counsel for the Special Matters Unit at the Office of General Counsel.
