Princeton Dissociates From Segments of Fossil Fuel Industry
The Board of Trustees of Princeton University voted earlier this month to dissociate from 90 companies pursuant to a fossil fuel dissociation decision made last year that focused on the most-polluting segments of the industry and on concerns about corporate disinformation campaigns. As a step toward the Board’s related commitment to achieving a net-zero endowment portfolio over time, the Princeton University Investment Company (PRINCO) will also eliminate all holdings in publicly traded fossil fuel companies. Thirty People Become U.S. Citizens at Naturalization Ceremony on Campus
Thirty people from 11 countries took the Oath of Allegiance to become naturalized citizens of the United States in a weekend ceremony on campus that celebrated the diversity, freedom and opportunities that abound in a nation where, the keynote speaker said, “there is always hope.” The new citizens, all residents of the Municipality of Princeton, took their oath in the Arthur Lewis Auditorium at the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA). $1 Million Grant Awarded to Program on Science and Global Security by MacArthur Foundation to Tackle Rising Nuclear Dangers
The Program on Science and Global Security (SGS), based at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, was awarded a $1 million grant from the MacArthur Foundation Nuclear Challenges program. ‘Viz Hub’ Equips Policy Students with Data Science Training
Statistical programs like Stata, R, and Python are second nature to fifth-year Ph.D. student Derek Wenning. With a focus in finance, macroeconomics, and spatial economics, data sciences are everyday tools in Wenning’s line of research. For many others, however, data can be a foreign language, which can be daunting and intimidating for young researchers. As a result, the Donald E. Funding Available for Innovative Education Projects and Programs
A fund offered through Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs will support creative, interdisciplinary research projects and programs addressing important issues in education. Now in its fifth year, the Overdeck Education Innovation Fund will award small grants of up to $10,000 for multiple innovative faculty and student research projects, as well as education programs. Carbon Dioxide Emissions More Costly to Society Than Previously Thought
A multi-year study of the social cost of carbon, a critical input for climate policy analysis, finds that every additional ton of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere costs society $185 — far higher than the current federal estimate of $51 per ton. Center for Information Technology Policy Gives Students Up-Close Government Experiences
For a third consecutive summer, Princeton’s Center for Information Technology Policy gave students the opportunity to learn the workings of local, state and federal government in the Public Interest Technology Summer Fellowship (PIT-SF) program. The students, five from Princeton and 14 from other universities, spent roughly eight weeks working for agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office. Native Americans experienced disproportionately high rates of deaths from COVID-19 due to poverty, crowded housing, high rates of chronic disease, employment in frontline jobs, and limited access to quality health care. Less is known about the pandemic’s effects on life expectancy for this population, which makes up 2% of the U.S. population. Intimate partner violence — or abuse and aggression in a romantic relationship — is a pervasive global issue. In Uganda, a primarily Christian country in East Africa, 56% of women who’ve been married report being sexually violated by a current partner, according to Uganda Bureau of Statistics. Sanyu A. Mojola received the 2022 Outstanding Publication Award from the American Sociological Association’s Section on Aging & the Life Course. She and her co-authors won for their paper, “‘A Nowadays Disease’: HIV/AIDS and Social Change in a Rural South African Community,” published in November 2021 by the American Journal of Sociology. The state of California enforced some of the most rigid COVID-19 restrictions, yet also experienced a significant drop in life expectancy during the first two years of the pandemic, according to a new study co-authored by Princeton University, Northwestern University, and other institutions. The research team — led by Northwestern University professor Hannes Schwandt — found that overall life expectancy in California decreased from 81.4 years in 2019 to 79.2 years in 2020 and 78.4 years in 2021.
