“Toxique” by Philippe, Statius Named a Finalist for the Albert Londres Prize
A book co-authored by a researcher at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs is one of four finalists for the 2021 Albert Londres Prize, the French equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. “Toxique” was co-authored by Sébastien Philippe, associate research scholar at Princeton’s Program on Science and Global Security (SGS), and Tomas Statius, a journalist from Disclose, an award-winning French investigative media organization. Fiske Receives Spain’s Frontiers of Knowledge Award
Susan Fiske was named a winner of the 12th edition of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards in Social Sciences. She received her award at a Sept. 22 ceremony in Spain. The Frontiers of Knowledge Awards are Spain’s version of the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Fiske, Higgins Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs at Princeton University’s Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, was recognized for a book she co-authored in 1984, which is now in its sixth edition. Elizabeth Choe Named Director of SPIA Undergraduate Program
Elizabeth Choe has been named director in the Undergraduate Program Office at Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA), effective Aug. 23. Born and raised in Queens, New York, Choe had a long history at New York University (NYU), both as a student and administrator, with education and experience in the areas of sports journalism, culture and education, and social work. Tackling Climate Change’s Most Complex Phenomena
A new partnership between Princeton University’s Center for Policy Research on Energy and the Environment (C-PREE) and the High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) is pairing students and researchers to work on solutions to today’s most-pressing environmental issues. This past summer, five student interns from HMEI partnered with faculty at C-PREE, a center based at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, to study endangered species, climate migration, land-use policy and more through the new program. Funding Available for Innovative Education Projects and Programs
A fund offered through Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs will support creative, interdisciplinary research projects and programs addressing important issues in education. Now in its fourth year, the Overdeck Education Innovation Fund will award small grants of up to $10,000 for multiple innovative faculty and student research projects, as well as education programs. Mummolo Receives Microsoft Funding for Police Body-Worn Camera Project
Microsoft has awarded $250,000 in funding to professor Jonathan Mummolo and a team of fellow social scientists to fund the development of a novel system to computationally analyze police body-worn camera (BWC) footage. Mummolo, assistant professor of politics and public affairs at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, is creating a system that will automate the process of summarizing body-worn camera content. As Princeton University resumes full on-campus teaching and research for the fall 2021 semester, there will be several new faces at the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA). A Better Understanding of “Wet Markets” is Key to Safeguarding Human Health, Biodiversity
Great uncertainty surrounds the origins of SARS-CoV-2. Early on, some suggested a link between COVID-19 and a seafood market in Wuhan, China. Other theories are now circulating, though the origins of the virus are still unknown. In response, governments have pushed for the closing of so-called “wet markets” around the world, but this is not an effective policy solution, Princeton University researchers report. Bénabou Awarded Jean-Jacques Laffont Prize
Roland Bénabou, the Theodore A. Wells ’29 Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, was awarded the 2021 Jean-Jacques Laffont Prize by the Toulouse School of Economics. He is the first current Princeton University faculty member to receive the prize since its inception in 2005. The award is given to “a renowned international economist whose research, in the spirit of the work undertaken by Professor Jean-Jacques Laffont, combines both the theoretical and the empirical,” according to the Toulouse School’s website.
