SPIA Researchers Named to Pioneering U.N. Nuclear Treaty Scientific Advisory Group
Three members of the Program on Science and Global Security (SGS) in the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs have been appointed to the newly launched Scientific Advisory Group of the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). SGS co-director Zia Mian, associate research scholar Sébastien Philippe Ph.D. ’18 and visiting researcher Moritz Kütt are among the 15 founding members of the Group, which held its initial meeting in March. SPIA Honors 16 Graduating Students at Hooding and Class Day Ceremonies
The day before Commencement, five graduating master’s students in the School of Public and International Affairs and 11 graduating bachelor’s degree students were honored with awards and prizes at respective gatherings of their classmates. At the Hooding and Awards Ceremony, held Monday morning, May 29, in McCarter Theater, SPIA recognized its MPP and MPA graduates. Five honors were presented: The Bradford Prize, awarded to the Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy student who has achieved both a distinguished academic record and a record of service to the STEP program, was awarded to Jessie Press-Williams. In her remarks, Sewell characterized the University’s informal motto — “In the nation’s service and the service of humanity” — as both a blueprint and a mandate for Princeton graduates: “Because, Class of 2023, our nation needs you. Most governments worldwide borrow, for a variety of purposes. Countries in the Global South historically had fewer options for international credit, as they often were perceived by private sector investors as too risky. In the last two decades, however, the menu of options open to these countries has expanded. Former World Food Programme Head Presents Wide-Ranging Talk to LISD Audience
David M. Beasley, the former executive director of the World Food Programme and a former governor of South Carolina, spoke with students, faculty, and community members on issues including global food security, leadership, public service, fundraising, and reconciliation on May 10. The wide-ranging talk was presented by the Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination. Beasley stepped down from WFP only just last month. Princeton School of Public and International Affairs Opens New Center in Washington, D.C.
The Princeton School of Public and International Affairs has long had a significant scholarly presence among and within the three branches of the federal government. Now the school has a dedicated office and meeting space in Washington, D.C., as well. SPIA has leased space just off Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., to be used for education, public affairs and other engagement. Susan Fiske, Doug Massey To Retire From SPIA
Susan Fiske and Douglas Massey, who have spent a combined 43 years at Princeton, will leave SPIA as leading scholars in their respective fields. Fiske, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs, came to Princeton in 2000 and was granted a SPIA appointment in 2012. Before joining Princeton, she held positions at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the University of Michigan, and Carnegie Mellon University. Seven Students Win 2023 Spirit of Princeton Award for Service, Contributions to Campus Life
Seven students have been named winners of the 2023 Spirit of Princeton Award, honoring Princeton University undergraduates for positive contributions to campus life.
