Sixty years after the Cuban Missile Crisis, the threats posed by nuclear weapons are as relevant as ever. Since 2020, the Princeton School on Science and Global Security has brought together next-generation scientists and engineers from around the world to learn technical and policy perspectives on how to reduce and end the threat from nuclear weapons. Princeton University-HBCU Partnerships Launch First Research Projects
Ten research collaborations between Princeton University faculty and their peers at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) have been selected to receive support through the Princeton Alliance for Collaborative Research and Innovation (PACRI). Ben Bernanke, Former Princeton Professor and Economics Department Chair, Receives Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences
Ben Bernanke, a Princeton professor of economics and public affairs from 1985 to 2002, chairman of the economics department from 1996 to 2002, and founder of the Bendheim Center for Finance, is among three winners sharing this year’s Nobel Prize in economic sciences. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2022 to Bernanke, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig for significantly improving “our understanding of the role of banks in the economy, particularly during financial crises.” The prize amount is 10 million Swedish kroner, about $900,000, divided among the recipients. …

Princeton Dissociates From Segments of Fossil Fuel Industry
The Board of Trustees of Princeton University voted earlier this month to dissociate from 90 companies pursuant to a fossil fuel dissociation decision made last year that focused on the most-polluting segments of the industry and on concerns about corporate disinformation campaigns. As a step toward the Board’s related commitment to achieving a net-zero endowment portfolio over time, the Princeton University Investment Company (PRINCO) will also eliminate all holdings in publicly traded fossil fuel companies. Thirty People Become U.S. Citizens at Naturalization Ceremony on Campus
Thirty people from 11 countries took the Oath of Allegiance to become naturalized citizens of the United States in a weekend ceremony on campus that celebrated the diversity, freedom and opportunities that abound in a nation where, the keynote speaker said, “there is always hope.” The new citizens, all residents of the Municipality of Princeton, took their oath in the Arthur Lewis Auditorium at the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA). $1 Million Grant Awarded to Program on Science and Global Security by MacArthur Foundation to Tackle Rising Nuclear Dangers
The Program on Science and Global Security (SGS), based at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, was awarded a $1 million grant from the MacArthur Foundation Nuclear Challenges program. Statistical programs like Stata, R, and Python are second nature to fifth-year Ph.D. student Derek Wenning. With a focus in finance, macroeconomics, and spatial economics, data sciences are everyday tools in Wenning’s line of research. For many others, however, data can be a foreign language, which can be daunting and intimidating for young researchers. As a result, the Donald E. Funding Available for Innovative Education Projects and Programs
A fund offered through Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs will support creative, interdisciplinary research projects and programs addressing important issues in education. Carbon Dioxide Emissions More Costly to Society Than Previously Thought
A multi-year study of the social cost of carbon, a critical input for climate policy analysis, finds that every additional ton of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere costs society $185 — far higher than the current federal estimate of $51 per ton. Center for Information Technology Policy Gives Students Up-Close Government Experiences
For a third consecutive summer, Princeton’s Center for Information Technology Policy gave students the opportunity to learn the workings of local, state and federal government in the Public Interest Technology Summer Fellowship (PIT-SF) program. The students, five from Princeton and 14 from other universities, spent roughly eight weeks working for agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office. Native Americans experienced disproportionately high rates of deaths from COVID-19 due to poverty, crowded housing, high rates of chronic disease, employment in frontline jobs, and limited access to quality health care. Less is known about the pandemic’s effects on life expectancy for this population, which makes up 2% of the U.S. population. Intimate partner violence — or abuse and aggression in a romantic relationship — is a pervasive global issue. In Uganda, a primarily Christian country in East Africa, 56% of women who’ve been married report being sexually violated by a current partner, according to Uganda Bureau of Statistics. Strong patriarchal beliefs often influence this behavior, but those in positions of power, like religious leaders, can shift traditional gender roles.
