Mojola Wins Best Publication Award From American Sociological Association
Sanyu A. Mojola received the 2022 Outstanding Publication Award from the American Sociological Association’s Section on Aging & the Life Course. She and her co-authors won for their paper, “‘A Nowadays Disease’: HIV/AIDS and Social Change in a Rural South African Community,” published in November 2021 by the American Journal of Sociology. The paper examines why people take up disease prevention activities — or don’t — in the wake of pandemics such as HIV/AIDS, which carry life and death consequences. Garip Named to Census Bureau’s National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations
Sociologist Filiz Garip was nominated and selected for the Census Bureau’s National Advisory Committee (NAC) on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations. The committee aims to provide expertise and guidance on race, ethnic, and population issues — influencing the implementation of Census Bureau programs and surveys, including the decennial census. Garip, professor of sociology and public affairs, was one of eight candidates chosen for the committee, and she will serve a three-year term. Goyal Wins Best Dissertation Award from American Political Science Association
Tanushree Goyal, assistant professor of politics and international affairs, won the the 2022 Mancur Olson Best Dissertation Award in the field of political economy by the American Political Science Association (APSA). Her dissertation, “Representation From Below: How Women Mobilize Inside Parties,” offers a novel perspective about how women’s representation enhances democracy and development in low- and middle-income countries, showing that women are more likely than men to recruit women as grassroots party activists, which helps them accomplish change. Life Expectancy Drops from 81 to 79 Years in California During COVID-19
The state of California enforced some of the most rigid COVID-19 restrictions, yet also experienced a significant drop in life expectancy during the first two years of the pandemic, according to a new study co-authored by Princeton University, Northwestern University, and other institutions. The research team — led by Northwestern University professor Hannes Schwandt — found that overall life expectancy in California decreased from 81.4 years in 2019 to 79.2 years in 2020 and 78.4 years in 2021. Hispanic populations in California lost 5.7 years of life expectancy between 2019 and 2021, while Black populations lost 3.8 years, Asian populations lost 3…

A book by Andreas Wiedemann, assistant professor of politics and international affairs, received two awards from the American Political Science Association (APSA). The book received the 2022 William Riker Award for the best book in political economy published within the last three years, as well as the 2022 Best Book on Class and Inequality. State Health and Value Strategies Program Awarded $10.6 Million Grant
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded a $10.6 million grant to State Health and Value Strategies (SHVS), a program based at the Center for Health and Wellbeing at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA). The award reflects two years of continued funding. Led by Heather Howard, professor of the practice and former New Jersey Commissioner of Health and Senior Services, SHVS is a nationwide health policy technical assistance consortium that works with state governments to implement innovative coverage and cost policies. Roe V. Wade Is Overturned
Today, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark ruling that protected women’s rights to choose an abortion. The decision determines that there is no longer a federal constitutional right to an abortion, instead leaving the right to the discretion of individual states. Princeton Biologist Bryan Grenfell Wins Kyoto Prize
Princeton University’s Bryan Grenfell, the Kathryn Briger and Sarah Fenton Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Public Affairs, is one of three recipients of the Kyoto Prize in 2022. Carnegie Endowment and Princeton Launch Groundbreaking Initiative to Counter Threats to the Information Environment
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Princeton University announced today a year-long effort to design the Institute for Research on the Information Environment (IRIE), an international resource to study information ecosystems that can spur evidence-based policy solutions.  “The recent pandemic has only underscored the challenges policymakers face in addressing complex issues within a polluted information environment.
