Princeton & Mozilla Launch Technology Policy Research Initiative
Data-driven public policy depends on data. And, in the area of technology policy, access to data has been a significant barrier to research. Concerned about how online services might intrude on privacy, push hyper-partisan misinformation, or disadvantage their competitors? Those services aren’t sharing the relevant data with researchers. A Better Understanding of “Wet Markets” is Key to Safeguarding Human Health, Biodiversity
Great uncertainty surrounds the origins of SARS-CoV-2. Early on, some suggested a link between COVID-19 and a seafood market in Wuhan, China. Other theories are now circulating, though the origins of the virus are still unknown. In response, governments have pushed for the closing of so-called “wet markets” around the world, but this is not an effective policy solution, Princeton University researchers report. Case Awarded Distinctions from the American Economic Association, National Institutes of Health
Anne Case, the Alexander Stewart 1886 Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, Emeritus, was named a 2021 Distinguished Fellow by the American Economic Association (AEA). The AEA Nominating Committee and voting members of the Executive Committee select up to four distinguished fellows each year, and the award recognizes the lifetime research contributions of distinguished economists. Bénabou Awarded Jean-Jacques Laffont Prize
Roland Bénabou, the Theodore A. Wells ’29 Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, was awarded the 2021 Jean-Jacques Laffont Prize by the Toulouse School of Economics. He is the first current Princeton University faculty member to receive the prize since its inception in 2005. The award is given to “a renowned international economist whose research, in the spirit of the work undertaken by Professor Jean-Jacques Laffont, combines both the theoretical and the empirical,” according to the Toulouse School’s website. The Class of 2021 has announced that internationally acclaimed comedian and author Trevor Noah will give remarks at the virtual Class Day ceremony on Saturday, May 15, and will be inducted as an honorary member of the class. Consuming Online Partisan News Leads to Distrust in the Media
Slanted media outlets are often blamed for growing polarization, but new research points to another consequence of consuming partisan news: an erosion of trust in the media. A team of researchers combined computational social science techniques and experimentation to study the long-term effects of online partisan media on political opinions and trust. Internet users were asked to change their default browser homepages to either the Huffington Post, a left-leaning news site, or Fox News, a more conservative outlet, during the 2018 U.S. midterm elections. Researchers based at Princeton University will receive funding from the Overdeck Innovation Fund to work on innovative, cross-disciplinary education research projects over the next two years. A total of $240,000 was awarded to Adele Goldberg, Chelsey Clark, Nathan Cheek, Elizabeth Levy Paluck, Claire Willeck, and Tali Mendelberg by the Overdeck Innovation Fund. Cecilia Elena Rouse​, former dean of the ​Princeton School of Public and International Affairs​ (SPIA)​, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as chair of President Joe Biden’s ​Council of Economic Advisers​ (CEA) on March 2. She is the first African American and just the fourth woman to lead the CEA in the 75 years of its existence. Amy Jeon ’21 Named Cowinner of Pyne Prize
Princeton University seniors Paige Allen, Amy Jeon and James Packman have been named co-winners of the 2021 Moses Taylor Pyne Honor Prize, the highest general distinction conferred on an undergraduate. The University is looking into ways to celebrate the honorees as a community later in the semester. The Pyne Honor Prize, established in 1921, is awarded to the senior who has most clearly manifested excellent scholarship, strength of character and effective leadership.
