Four New Faculty Members Join Princeton School of Public and International Affairs
The Princeton School of Public and International Affairs is pleased to welcome four new full-time faculty members with appointments effective July 1, 2020. Four existing faculty members have received promotions and one transitioned to emeritus status. The School acknowledged the passing of two emeritus faculty members during the 2019-20 academic year. New Faculty Professors Layna Mosley has joined the School as professor of politics and international affairs. Defense Department Funding Will Enable Princeton Researchers to Study China’s Economic Rise, Effects
The Empirical Studies of Conflict Project (ESOC) at Princeton University will explore how countries like China use economic power to pursue their national interests, thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Defense. The project, which will be led by ESOC Director Jacob N. Shapiro and Co-Director Ethan B. Kapstein, was selected through an annual competition held by the Minerva Research Initiative. US Crisis Monitor to Provide Real-Time Data on Political Violence and Demonstrations in America
Amid a rising tide of political polarization, violent hate crimes, and widespread social mobilization, the United States is at heightened risk of political violence and instability going into the 2020 election. This risk is further exacerbated by an economic contraction triggered by the global Covid-19 pandemic, which may now be poised for a second wave. Despite these indicators, there have been no initiatives to collect comprehensive data on both political violence and demonstrations across the country, impeding data-driven efforts to build community resilience, and to assess potential threats. Faculty Vote for Comprehensive Curriculum Review and New Graduate DEI Requirement
Faculty at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs voted last week to implement a mandatory Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) course requirement for Master in Public Affairs (MPA) students. This new requirement is a temporary measure, as the School carries out an extensive review of the MPA core curriculum. These efforts — in conjunction with the School’s recent name change — aim to carefully examine how the School supports DEI, and ensure the core curricula reflect the School's mission statement and current scholarship. Virtual Awards Ceremony Honored 95 Students Earning Advanced Degrees
A virtual awards ceremony on June 1 honored students who earned advanced degrees from the the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs (changed on June 27 to the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs). The event highlighted the achievements of an extraordinary class during extraordinary times — underscoring the crucial need for effective and equitable public policy and the value of student activism. Nearly 100 students earned advanced degrees in 2020, including three PhDs, 21 Master in Public Policy students, and 71 Master in Public Affairs students, including two who earned MPA/J.D. degrees. Eduardo Morales has been awarded the 19th Banco Sabadell Foundation Award for Economic Research. This award aims to acknowledge the work of researchers in economics, business, and social knowledge and their role in promoting social wellbeing. Dear Community, I hope you have had to a chance to read President Eisgruber’s message, sharing with the Princeton community that the University Trustees have voted to remove the name “Woodrow Wilson” from our School and rename it the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. I am writing to let you know I unequivocally support this decision. Virtual Ceremony Honors 108 Woodrow Wilson School Graduating Seniors
