

Celebration of MPA Program’s 75th Anniversary Headlines Princeton SPIA’s Reunions and Commencement Ceremonies
With Princeton University set to celebrate the tradition-laden events of Reunions and Commencement, the School of Public and International Affairs is adding an extra layer of nostalgia to the proceedings.
As part of Reunions, the School will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the first cohort of its Master in Public Affairs program, which graduated in 1950.
At 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 23, MPA alumni from throughout the decades will gather in Arthur Lewis Auditorium for a special presentation. After remarks by Dean Amaney Jamal, several MPA alumni will offer recollections of their time in the program. The speakers include Karen McGuinness, the School’s associate dean for graduate education and a member of the MPA Class of 1985. Following is a reception for all Princeton SPIA alumni in Schultz Café and Dodds Atrium.
Elsewhere at Reunions, in addition to a slate of class parties, panel discussions, and talks, Princeton SPIA is cosponsoring a workshop inspired by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans’s popular book “Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life.” Chris MacPherson MPA ’08 will lead the workshop, which will include interactive activities such as mind mapping, prototyping different career paths, and engaging in reflective exercises to identify core values and passions.
Additional special School-related events at Reunions include retired Gen. David Patreus *85, *87 in conversation with former Princeton SPIA Dean Anne-Marie Slaughter ’80 on the future of Ukraine on Friday at 2 p.m. in McCosh Hall, and the return of the Orange & Black Oasis, an alcohol-free gathering featuring live jazz and dessert, scheduled for 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday in the Chancellor Green Rotunda.
The Major Reunions Brunch, welcoming back the SPIA Classes of 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015, concludes the School’s Reunions activities on Sunday, May 25, in Schultz.
With the conclusion of Reunions comes the start of the School’s Commencement activities, kicked off by the graduation brunch of the Scholars in the Nation’s Service Initiative on Sunday.
Princeton SPIA’s hooding ceremony, for graduates of the MPP and MPA programs, will be Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. in McCarter Theatre. The 75th anniversary MPA class comprises 68 graduates, while 24 students will earn their MPPs. Jamal, Assistant Dean for Global Outreach, Admissions & Alumni Engagement Steven Petric, and Katie Deal and Dylan Gates, the outgoing chairs of the Princeton University Policy Student Government, will speak.
At 2 that afternoon in Richardson Auditorium, the School will hold its Class Day ceremony, celebrating the 118 bachelor’s degree recipients and honoring the winners of prizes and awards. Jamal and Sophie Pye ’25 will speak.
Princeton University’s Commencement is Tuesday, May 27, at Princeton Stadium, beginning at 10 a.m.
