Anne-Marie Slaughter, president and CEO of New America and former director of policy planning for the U.S. State Department under Hillary Clinton, will discuss her new book, “Unfinished Business: Women Men Work Family” (Random House, 2015), at 4:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall on the Princeton University campus. A book sale and signing will follow the discussion.

Slaughter is the Bert G. Kerstetter ’66 University Professor Emerita of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University and former dean of the University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, who is sponsoring the discussion. 

In 2009 Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appointed Slaughter as her director of policy planning for the U.S. State Department; Slaughter was the first woman to hold the position. A foreign policy analyst, legal and international relations scholar and public commentator, Slaughter was previously a professor at the University of Chicago Law School and Harvard Law School and is a former president of the American Society of International Law.

After leaving her position at the U.S. State Department for family reasons, and returning to an academic career that gave her more time with her family, Slaughter began to question the feminist narrative she grew up with. She wrote an article for The Atlantic, “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” which created a firestorm of media attention and sparked intense national debate. It quickly became one of the most-read pieces in the magazine’s history. 

In her new book, Slaughter takes a hard look at our reflexive beliefs, the “half-truths” we tell ourselves that are holding women and men back. Her work reveals the missing piece of the puzzle, a new focus that can reunite the women’s movement and provide a common banner under which we can all advance.
