In his new book, "The Back Channel: A Memoir of American Diplomacy and the Case for its Renewal," storied diplomat Amb. William J. Burns opens a window on American diplomacy in action over the course of a 33-year career. A former deputy secretary of state and former ambassador to Russia — during the collapse of post-Cold War relations with Putin — Burns has served five presidents and ten secretaries of state, and currently serves as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
