"Foreign Fighters. User Guide for Armed Groups" - Vera Mironova, author of  "From Freedom FIghters to Jihadists," will talk about recruitment of foreigners for armed groups and their motivation for joining; how these fighters choose a group to fight with and why some quit and leave. She will also look not only at benefits but also at problems such fighters bring to the armed groups, and the groups’ policies towards them. The research is based on dozens of interviews with foreign fighters in Syrian conflict and fieldwork conducted in 2016-2017 while she was embedded with Iraqi Special Operation Forces for the Mosul Battle.
