Former United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Robert H. Serry will present a public talk Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, 7 p.m., at Robertson Hall.

Amb. Serry’s talk is co-sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and the Mamdouha S. Bobst Center for Peace and Justice, which is based at the University.

Amb. Serry has extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy and crisis management having served with both the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the U.N. In March 2015, he completed a seven-year assignment as the U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, based in Jerusalem. For NATO he served as the deputy assistant secretary-general for Crisis Management and Operations from 2001 to 2005 and was involved in NATO’s operations in the Balkans and Afghanistan.

As a Dutch diplomat, Amb. Serry was posted in Moscow, New York (United Nations) and appointed as the first ambassador to the newly independent Ukraine in 1992. Following his Ukrainian posting, he wrote a book about his experiences, titled “Standplaats Kiev” (Amsterdam 1997), which was published and translated in the Dutch and Ukrainian languages. Amb. Serry also served as Dutch ambassador in Dublin, Ireland.

Amb. Serry was involved in ‘second track’ diplomacy between Israel and the Palestinians and participated in the events leading up to the Middle East Peace Conference at Madrid in 1991. During his assignments, he also gained experience in contacts with non-state actors.
