“Service was always my default. Early on, I knew I wanted to work for something bigger than myself. It was innate and modeled by my parents, who run an affordable housing development company on the South Side of Chicago. My mom was born and raised in Chicago, and my dad grew up on a farm in Iowa. They met at a church in Chicago, and raised me and my sister in Hyde Park. I spent much of my childhood in a ballet studio, which gave me a deep appreciation for the arts and put me in a room with people who have many different passions. I still value any time I can spend in the studio. I went on to study #economics at @vassarcollege because I saw how much economics and policy matters to people’s lives. Right now, I’m particularly interested in our fiscal and monetary response to #Covid19: who has access to a backstop and who doesn’t. What are the long run implications of this crisis? Before enrolling at @princetonSPIA, I worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and before that at the U.S. Treasury Department in international economic policy under the direction of Anthony Marcus MPA ’87 who encouraged me to apply to the School. Our class is among the most diverse the School has ever enrolled, and I am thrilled to be a part of it. This cohort has given me hope for the future and that our institutions will be better equipped to serve the people they represent. I am excited to spend the next two years learning with and from my classmates and asking questions. When you ask questions, you open up space for others to be comfortable with not having the ‘right’ answer, and that’s powerful. You never know what’s going to happen when you ask a question, even if it seems obvious. So always just ask.” - Karlin Gatton MPA ’22 @georgekarlin. #Princetagram #PolicyProfile is an @Instagram series featuring our community. Want to be featured? Comment/DM us.
