James O'Donnell
Biography
Jimmy grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts, before attending Villanova University where he studied economics and political science. His senior thesis explored the relationship between union density and U.S. wage inequality during the late 20th century. Upon graduation, Jimmy received a Fulbright research grant to study Finland’s basic income experiment. Returning from the Fulbright, he began working at the Brookings Institution as a research assistant, studying a broad array of domestic economic policy issues including a federal job guarantee, labor unions, and the gig economy. After Brookings, Jimmy worked as a research and policy analyst at the Economic Innovation Group. This past summer, he worked as a graduate committee intern with the U.S. Senate Committee on Budget. Outside of work, he spent time volunteering with Special Olympics D.C. and the Workers’ Rights Institute. At SPIA, Jimmy continues to explore his research interests in workers’ rights, labor market institutions, and the future of work(ers). In his free time, Jimmy enjoys playing golf, following Boston sports, and spending far too much money at used bookstores.
