Sherrod Smith
Biography
Sherrod is interested in legal and policy issues pertaining to the administration of justice, enforcement of civil rights, and national security. He is originally from Milwaukee and most recently worked for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law’s national office in Washington, D.C. While at the Lawyers’ Committee, Sherrod partnered with community stakeholders, Department of Justice (DOJ) Civil Rights Division alumni, and the Matthew Shepard Foundation to host hate crime response trainings for local prosecutors and law enforcement leaders in different states throughout the country. Sherrod also helped organize the Lawyers’ Committee’s Enhancing the Response to Hate Crimes Advisory Committee initiative with other national civil rights organizations, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). Prior to the Lawyers’ Committee, Sherrod spent over five years serving as a presidential appointee in the Obama administration at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). At DHS, he served in Secretary Jeh Johnson’s office as the Deputy White House Liaison. Sherrod is a joint degree candidate splitting his time between SPIA and the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. He recently completed his summer internship with the New York County District Attorney’s Office. He earned a B.A. in economics from Boston University, where he was also a member of the men’s basketball team.
