Tanisha Hewanpola
Biography
Tanisha is an experienced multilateralist who has spent the last decade working on human rights, conflict prevention, and peacemaking at the United Nations in New York. Since 2018, she has worked for the U.N. Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs on ways to advance women’s participation in peace and political processes, and on gender considerations in ceasefires, sanctions, hate speech, and counter-terrorism. Prior to joining the U.N., Tanisha was a career diplomat in Australia’s Foreign Service, and served at Australia’s Permanent Mission to the U.N. in New York as the human rights and women, peace and security expert (including on the U.N. Security Council), and later as the conflict prevention and peacebuilding expert. At University, Tanisha was politically active and was elected president of the student union. This time, she is returning to university life with her spouse, one-year-old son, and 19-year-old cat.
