As Ibrahim Kante prepared to begin the 2020 Junior Summer Institute (JSI) at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, he thought he would simply take classes online for six weeks and move on to his senior year at Longwood University. Middle-Aged Americans Report More Pain Than the Elderly
As people age, they tend to report more acute or chronic pain — a common sign of getting older. Yet, in the United States, middle-aged adults are now reporting more pain than the elderly, according to a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). This paradoxical finding is confined to the two-thirds of the U.S. population without a four-year college degree, and happens because each generation of less-educated Americans is experiencing higher pain throughout their lives, the researchers said. Mental Illness Treatment Varies Widely Among American Adolescents Within and Across ZIP Codes
Children are struggling with mental health issues more now than perhaps ever before, though the treatment available — therapy, drugs, or both — differs widely from state to state. Using a national database of insurance claims, Princeton University researchers investigated the type of treatment adolescents — most of whom were around the average age of 12 and suffering from anxiety or depression — receive after a first episode of mental illness. Less than half of children received any therapy within three months, and 22.5% of children received only drug therapy, the researchers report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). …

Funding Available for Innovative Education Projects and Programs
A fund offered through Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs will support creative, interdisciplinary research projects and programs addressing important issues in education. In the third year of this award, the Overdeck Education Innovation Fund will award up to $360,000 for multiple faculty and student education research projects, as well as education programs. Defense Department Funding Will Enable Princeton Researchers to Study China’s Economic Rise, Effects
The Empirical Studies of Conflict Project (ESOC) at Princeton University will explore how countries like China use economic power to pursue their national interests, thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Defense. The project, which will be led by ESOC Director Jacob N. Shapiro and Co-Director Ethan B. Kapstein, was selected through an annual competition held by the Minerva Research Initiative.
