Children's health has long-lasting effects for both individuals and the nation, making children's health and health disparities topics of great policy concern. The past century has seen vast improvements in mortality and infectious disease in young children, but other health problems are on the rise. The greatest health threats to today’s U.S. children are social and environmental conditions, which play a role in such conditions as obesity, asthma, and mental health disorders.
This conference will present the findings of research that uses the strongest evidence to date to assess how best to promote child health and, more specifically, what school and community interventions and strategies work best at various stages of children’s development. Discussions will highlight the role of school-based health centers and identify ways that schools and communities can promote nutrition and physical activities in children.
The conference is an outreach event for the latest Future of Children journal, “Policies to Promote Child Health.” This issue of the journal, edited by Janet Currie and Nancy Reichman, will be released in May.
