On March 6, 2015, Princeton University’s Innovations for Successful Societies (ISS) program will host a 1-day conference on public norms and government.  Karla Hoff, co-author of the 2015 World Development Report: Mind, Society, and Behavior, will give the keynote address.  The topic reflects current areas of innovative scholarship in the growing field of "soft" policy approaches, and is reinforced by over 2,500 interviews conducted by ISS around the globe. These policy approaches are designed to shift public norms or citizen behavior without heavy reliance on economic incentives and legal enforcement. Driven by insights and research from psychology, sociology, and behavioral economics, these policies utilize a range of tactics from nudges to social marketing, to leveraging the power of information.  The conference will bring together a small group of academic researchers and practitioners to identify what we know, where the gaps in conceptualization and theory lie, which empirical strategies may help move research forward, and how research may influence public policy.
