Sergio Rodriguez Camarena
Biography
Sergio was born in Sayula, Jalisco, México, but grew up in Santa Ana, California. Growing up low-income, undocumented, and queer shaped Sergio’s career and academic interests. He graduated from Pomona College and received his Bachelor of Arts in international relations with a minor in French. During his time at Pomona College, he held leadership positions in the Pomona College Quest Scholars and Improving Dreams, Equality, Access, and Success (IDEAS) at the Claremont Colleges, student-led organizations that provided support to first-generation and/or low-income students and undocumented students, respectively. He studied abroad in Freiburg, Germany, and explored immigration law and policy in the European Union. Upon graduating, he served as a summer research assistant at Programma Integra, a social cooperative in Rome, Italy, working to improve the conditions of refugees and asylum seekers. This work prepared him for his 2-year fellowship at the Immigrant Justice Corps (IJC) as a Community Fellow in Staten Island’s El Centro del Inmigrante. At IJC, Sergio was a BIA Accredited representative and provided direct legal representation and counsel to low-income immigrant communities, expanding on IJC's mission toward universal representation. Most recently, Sergio worked as a Program Analyst II in Vera's California Team. His work focused primarily on supporting Los Angeles County’s efforts to expand alternatives to incarceration, pretrial diversion, and community-based systems of care. At Princeton, Sergio hopes to continue his work in developing the necessary policies and pathways for undocumented communities to access resources, feel a sense of belonging, and thrive.
