The Woodrow Wilson School Students and Alumni of Color (SAOC) will host the 19th annual symposium, "Seizing the Moment: Social Activism & Policy-Making in the Wake of Ferguson," on March 28-29, 2015. The mission of the symposium is to bring together students and alumni of the School in common cause to promote racial diversity, discuss issues relevant to the social, political, and professional development of students of color, and support the social and political development of communities of color.
The gathering this year will bring students, alumni, and community members together to grapple with the question, "how do we seize this moment of racial consciousness and advance justice for communities of color across the nation?" We will begin with a day of learning and inspiration by engaging with experts in the midst of building a movement for racial equity, from activists in Ferguson to policy advocates pushing for more equitable solutions in cities across the country. On day two, current students and alumni will break out into an intimate space to discuss how current and future policymakers can continue supporting one another in our fight for justice. We will end with alumni helping map the way forward for the School's community and beyond.
Our call to action to all participants is simple: how will you seize the moment through social activism and policymaking and contribute to advancing racial justice in your community?
"The burden belongs to the nation, and the hands of none of us are clean if we bend not our energies to righting these great wrongs."
- W.E.B Du Bois
