A major policy question today is how to prevent people from joining violent groups, such as ISIS, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, and gangs in Latin America. Often people assume it's mainly for economic reasons, but as social psychology and behavioral economics tells us, financial reward is rarely the sole motivator of behavior. Dr. Rebecca Wolfe, Director of the Peace and Conflict Team of Mercy Corps, will present research on why people join violent groups and how social psychology can help us design better interventions for preventing recruitment into such groups.
