Shivani Nayyar is a co-author of the UN’s flagship Human Development Reports. Shivani received a B.A. in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and a Masters from Cambridge University, UK. After receiving her Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University in 2009, she has been working with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). She has also taught Economics and Financial Management at Princeton University and Vassar College. At UNDP’s Human Development Report Office (HDRO) since 2012, her work involves quantitative and qualitative research on different topics covered by the human development reports, including crises and their impacts, globalization, technology and automation, and climate change. She has also published research on inequality, food security, health, and gender.
Established in 1990 by economists Mahboob Ul Haq and Amartya Sen, the Human Development Reports (HDR) analyze international development using a people-centered approach. HDR 1990 said, “People are the real wealth of nations.” HDR 2019 uses the human lens to shed light on a new generation of inequalities emerging as new technologies and climate change are reshaping the world in myriad ways.
