In 2023, something unusual happened in the Big Sky state. Montana’s Republican-controlled state government unexpectedly adopted a series of housing reforms championed by environmentalists, business interests, tribal nations, and affordable housing advocates. This legislative package, which Bloomberg CityLab called the ‘Montana Miracle,’ made multifamily housing easier to build and put its cities and towns on a path towards denser, and less carbon-intensive growth patterns. How did this happen? What lessons can we learn? Join Danny Tenenbaum MPP ‘24, a former member of the Montana State Legislature, for this whirlwind tour of Red state politics and the thrilling world of residential zoning law.

MPP Forum is a weekly event normally scheduled with lunch* on Fridays during the academic year. It allows each MPP student to showcase their career journey and expertise on policy issue of their choice with the SPIA community. This formal presentation is about 50 minutes followed by 20 minute Q &A.

*RSVP required. Lunch will be served at noon. We will try our best but cannot guarantee accommodation for all dietary restrictions.
