What does religion and the role of religious leadership mean as a source of stability or instability in our time? What does this mean with respect to states and international organizations, as well as non-state actors? Where and how do spirituality and values appear in political and leadership contests? How do these contests and beliefs impact geostrategy and geopolitics?
This seminar will provide an opportunity to learn from expert perspectives concerning the role and impact of religions - or secular value systems - and leadership on the conduct of geopolitics & realpolitik.
Specifically, what religious and leadership aspects can be considered helpful for global understanding, stability, and peacemaking; conversely, which aspects are challenging or dangerous? What role does the internet, social media, and algorithmic technology play in religion and geostrategy; how is the digital deliberately employed?
We will consider several layers of analysis - communal, national, regional / continental, hemispheric, and global - since local developments rarely have only local effects.
