Growing up in Southeast Asia in the ’90s, I experienced severe air pollution from forest fires, usually caused by forest clearing for palm oil plantations. I developed asthma and became passionate about the environment and how to make economic development sustainable without depleting your natural assets. I am a first-generation student. My father was the only person in his family to complete high school, and my mom didn't get the opportunity to go to college.

Growing up as an ethnic minority in Malaysia made me think about disadvantaged and marginalized groups, which strengthened my commitment to public policy.

My passion lies at the intersection of environmental sustainability and economic development. I earned my undergraduate degree in geography at Middlebury College, and I started working at the World Resources Institute, an environmental think tank. I also worked at the National Geographic Society and the World Wildlife Fund, all within a year after undergrad. A year later, I joined the World Bank and started working for their environment and natural resources department and, within that, the economics unit. I worked on environmental economics and policy, including reports on the economic cost of coastal degradation in West Africa, the health cost of air pollution in the Middle East, and the sustainable oceans economy in Indonesia.

2020 was an eventful year: I got married to my better half Melissa, adopted a rescue dog, Sosa, and came to Princeton during the pandemic. My favorite classes at SPIA were Energy Economics with Amy Craft and Economic Analysis of Development with Anne Case. My goal is to work on economic and financial policies that can incentivize the transition to a net-zero carbon emissions future. I’d like to combine my analytical and technical skills with an impact-making perspective to achieve this goal.

At SPIA, We Care

Our Community

We are committed to ensuring that all members of our diverse community feel respected, supported, and valued both inside and outside the classroom. We seek to strengthen the capacity of our students to promote equity and foster inclusion while here and in the broader world.
