A book penned by Professor Rory Truex, assistant professor of politics and public affairs at Princeton University, received the 2017 Leon Epstein Outstanding Book Award from the American Political Science Association (APSA). This award recognizes a book published in the last two calendar years that has made outstanding contributions to research and scholarship on political organizations and parties.

“Making Autocracy Work: Representation and Responsiveness in Modern China” integrates qualitative and quantitative evidence to show how the Chinese Communist party and National People’s Congress allow for selective representation on certain issues.

Out of nearly 40 submissions, “Making Autocracy Work” stood out for its innovative use of theory and data to study representation in China’s autocratic political system. The selection committee praised Truex’s work for its relevance beyond Chinese politics, as the book offers insight to parties, organizations and representation in authoritarian settings well beyond China.

A formal announcement of the committee’s decision will be made at the 2017 APSA Annual Meeting on Thursday, August 31, in San Francisco, California.
