The Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance (NCGG) is sponsoring a conference on The Laws of War as an International Regime: History, Theory, and Prospects. The conference will be hosted by Robert O. Keohane (Princeton University), Giovanni Mantilla (CIDE), and Geoffrey Wallace (Rutgers University), and will take place at Princeton on October 15-17, 2015.

This conference will gather a group of experts to think collectively about the history, evolution, and influence of the laws of war (LOW). Although International Relations scholars have been prolific with respect to most international regimes in existence, relatively little work has theorized the origins, development, operation, and effectiveness of the LOW. At the same time, the last few years have featured a growing abundance of research about the LOW among fellow scholarly communities, in particular international law, history, and philosophy. The goal of the conference is to promote interdisciplinary and IR-oriented (broadly conceived) research on crucial questions about the LOW, taking the complex new histories and debates seriously, and applying these insights to contemporary processes of international rule formation, evolution, and application.
