George Packer is a staff writer at The Atlantic and formerly at The New Yorker, as well as a novelist and playwright. He will discuss his new book: “Our Man: Richard Holbrooke and the End of the American Century.” “Our Man” takes the reader on a tumultuous journey through an unparalleled diplomatic career spanning 50 years of America’s foreign policy.

This event celebrates Princeton University's acquisition of the Richard C. Holbrooke Papers, which are now available for the public to view in Mudd Library. The collection traces Holbrooke’s long public career as well as an era in American public policy. From the journals and letters Holbrooke wrote from foreign service posts in Vietnam in the 1960s to his draft of suggested policy in Afghanistan near the end of his life in 2010, Holbrooke’s files document his service in the Carter Administration, the oral histories he recorded with Clark Clifford on postwar presidents, records of Holbrooke’s work founding the American Academy in Berlin while he was U.S. Ambassador to Germany, and schedules and diaries of the Dayton Peace Accords to end the Bosnian War in 1995. The papers are rife with notes scrawled in meetings and on flights, drafts of speeches, and voluminous personal and official correspondence — revealing hopes and qualms, complexities of Holbrooke’s character and of the global political landscape over a 50-year period that, in George Packer’s words, marked “the end of the American century.”
