Princeton University Press was recently made aware that the Korean edition of Angus Deaton’s book, "The Great Escape: Health, Wealth, and the Origins of Inequality," was published with changes that do not accurately reflect the original work. This edition, published by Hankyung BP, contained changes and omissions from the English text; and also included an introduction to the work by a Korean economist, explicitly positioning the book as a counterpoint to Piketty’s "Capital in the Twenty-First Century." These changes and new introduction were not vetted or approved by either the author or by Princeton University Press. 

Hankyung BP has agreed to remove the current Korean-language edition from sale. They will release a new edition, with a new translation of the text that will be independently reviewed, to accurately reflect the original text of Prof. Deaton’s book. This new edition will also remove the introduction claiming that the book should be read as a counterpoint to other works on inequality.

This is the only statement that Princeton University Press or Professor Angus Deaton intends to make on this matter. Queries regarding the new Korean edition should be directed to Hankyung BP.
